Base attack type?

Postby Sandman25 » Tue Sep 22, 2015 10:39 pm

My Gandayah has just hit Chindi with basic attack and I got message "It is very effecient" or something like that. Chindi resists Slash and Pierce but is weak to Impact so I guess Gandayah used Impact base attack. Yet it is not visible anywhere in-game. Is Impact base type for all demons? If not, I suggest to display the type somewhere in description.
Another suggestion is to display spell range for ranged spells somewhere. It is unpleasant surprise when enemy has Frost Ring and you don't know if it can cast it at you or not because you have never casted the spell yet.

I've got adding basic attack type info in-game on a list here somewhere. :) Biggest problem is figuring out where to put it (and probably having to make icons for them, since they'd show up like abilities) For now, you can judge it fairly accurately by the verbs used:

Slash: claw, slash
Impact: hit
Pierce: peck, bite, stab

Better range info is a good idea. I'm a little leery of using direct numbers because Demon uses some geometry (a range of 4 for example, could mean "4 north" or "4 west", but it cannot mean "4 northwest"), but I could at least add "Short", "Medium", "Long" to give some indication.

Oops, I didn't notice there were different verbs for attacks. Thank you.

No problem. :) Listing basic attacks in-game is one of those things that, while it sounds little and simple, would be a pain because I'll need to pretty much shuffle around all the character sheet stuff to make room for it. :( It probably won't happen until I have some other more pressing reason to do so :D

Well, the reason is present IMHO. I don't think many players will be happy to write down base attack type to make sure they will field a good army vs monsters who are resistant to Pierce and Slash but are weak to Impact.
Maybe append a line like "Base attack type is Foo" to the end of monster description?

That would be easier to find room for than a whole ability listing... I'll take a swing at it in this build. :)

If circular LoS is a problem, then maybe display range of spell in orthogonal direction which happens to be its max distance also? This way player can be sure that the spell cannot hit at closer distance, no matter what the direction is.

Yeah, if I'm going to stick with numerical range and circular LoS, worst case would probably be the way to do it. I'm probably overthinking it, Stone Soup lived with that solution for 10 years and I don't remember lots of issues with it. :P
